RE: big girls in costumes

Couldn’t reblog this shit fast enough.

can I get a hell yes?

Challenge accepted. My cosplay at Heroes this past weekend was MY FIRST EVER and I was fucking terrified. I was so scared that my size would result in ridicule, and having my love of the character dismissed. But instead, I felt better and more like myself than I ever had before.

SO. I WILL ENDEAVOR TO CONTINUE. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

It makes me so happy to see someone video responding to Alex’s video. Seriously girls, wear whatever the hell you want to cosplay events and in real life. The way you dress and show off your body is no one else’s god damn business.

With all apologies to Dr. Seuss, a poem for Mother’s Day for the Moms of DC Comics.

There are Moms who are Queens

There are Moms who run family and farm

There are Moms who are protective

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all (x)

Girl Comics

It’s now kind of my goal to find a way to recreate this with all the costumers I know, add in the text, cropping, and framing in post-production, and then make this into a print or poster or something (with all proceeds going to charity, if that became a thing).

You have my boob armor.

Here is a bunch of fake nerds, oh, wait, I meant to say THE MOST AWESOME CHICKS EVER SO AWESOME THEY WILL BURN YOUR DAMN FOOL EYES OUT OF YOUR FACE IF YOU CALL THEM FAKE NERDS.
Ahem.
It might be hard to see, but they are all symbolizing a color of the Lanterns, with the great NerdyBird taking the classic green.

In light of things that have happened recently, to Gail Simone more specifically, I thought it was wise to repeat myself.  Although I disagree with how they handled Barbara Gordon and the character of Batgirl, the way they let go of Gail Simone is unacceptable, immature and unprofessional on so many degrees.  It only proves that DC not only does not care about female characters, but also it’s female staff as well.

Personally, I’m glad that Batgirl was selling so well to show DC that we want female characters to be showcased more, but to be honest: I’ve never read it.  I have not read anything from the New52 because of what it stands for.  Some have said it was very good, others have said it was meh quality to say the least, but if it was selling better than most… why fire the person responsible for it?

More importantly, why are you still buying into this crap? It stands for discrimination, sexism, racism, transphobia, homophobia & going fifty years backwards.  ”But,” you say, “They have a Muslim character.” To that I say so what?  So that suddenly erases all the bastarding they’ve done?  So that suddenly erases the undertone sexist & racist nature of their comics?

We control the media.  We get to decide what we consume.  They are a service industry, and I’m not going to lie down and accept whatever bullshit they give me. So we’re gonna have to take things to the next level:

  • The obvious one: stop buying their comics completely. Do not support your favorite artist or writer anymore.  It’s obvious that they don’t care about quality.
  • The little things: do not buy any DC products.  Anything.  From.  DC.  Action figures, posters, video games, t-shirts — literally anything with a DC logo on it, stop buying it.
  • The big one: stop going to DC Comics movies.  Don’t go see Man of Steel.  Don’t buy The Dark Knight Rises DVD.  This is where they get their money.
  • Annoy them: send them letters.  And not just one letter, send ten.  And keep sending them.  They don’t have to be eloquent, just make sure the point is you’re not putting up with this bullshit anymore.  Tweet them, email them — just make them pay attention.
  • More importantly, tweet Dan Didio.
  • Lastly, inform people who may not know what DC Comics is doing.  I know this will hurt comic book stores, but you can help them by buying Marvel, Dynamite or other independent comic books instead.  I realize that Marvel isn’t perfect either, but at least they’re trying.
  • As always, be polite.  No cursing, no name calling, but make them listen.  We have the power to end this reboot.  And that’s fine if you don’t want to do anything, but then I don’t want to be associated with you anymore.  Because that means you’re okay with sexism, racism and a whole laundry list of things wrong with DC.

Make sure that you make it clear to Dan Didio that you don’t want him in control anymore.  He’s the problem.  It’s him that’s causing all this ridiculous bullshit.  Some say Scott Lobdell is to blame, but Dan gets the final say on everything.  Most of Scott’s changes are just what they are: changes.  Albeit, horrible, sexist and ridiculous changes, but just changes nonetheless.  He’s not erasing characters’ from story lines in the name of being iconic.

I don’t know what you have to do, but I’m done with this bullshit.  I want to save my favorite characters, but that can only happen if everyone wants to save them, too.

I’m really just reblogging, but I added tags to get this more out there

Didio isn’t going to fire himself. His boss, however, Diane Nelson… well. Does anyone have a way to write HER?

I am increasingly of this opinion.  A good friend of mine dropped DC after the disgusting fridging of Lian Harper.  She hasn’t bought or read anything by them since.

I own over a dozen DC t-shirts, quite a few pairs of undies, a great many figures, not to mention a bookshelf full of comics and trades…but I think it may be time to stop buying DC and move on to a company that actually values my business and its own employees.

And I agree that Dan DiDio is not going to fire himself.  Address your letters to Diane Nelson, if you can.

I want to tread very carefully with how I respond to this because I do respect where this is coming from and I agree with MOST of it.  But I do think that sometimes things like this come about without truly thinking about what all the ramifications are for all the female characters involved when one advocates something like this.

Let me be very clear:  I fully support making it beyond clear that Dan Didio’s leadership at this company is not something any of us can support.  I fully believe and support that his leadership is running the comics division into the ground.  I also hold Diane Nelson responsible for some of this as she is a woman in power delegating to men who have, in my opinion, made some truly horrible mistakes.

Let me be clear on something else:  I am livid about what has happened to Gail.  Livid.  Angry.  Heartbroken.  100% on her side.  Raging.  Upset.  I will follow Gail wherever she goes and she has my full support.

I have not purchased any books in the new 52 in months and I won’t until there is new leadership at the top.  I cut myself off from them completely.   The only book I’m purchasing is  Bryan Q. Miller’s Smallville Season 11 because it’s a book that respects Lois Lane.  I agree 100% that purchasing books in the new 52 contributes to the problem right now.

However, I think that due to the fact that we aren’t all involved in the same fandoms…you may not be aware that some of the things you are advocating here actually contribute to harming other female fans.

Telling people to boycott Man of Steel doesn’t hurt, Dan Didio guys as he has absolutely nothing to do with the fiim.  But it might hurt the women who love Lois Lane who are counting on and praying that a movie with a beloved 4 time Oscar Nominee in the role in a movie that makes money might be a solace during a time when the character is being continually marginalized in the books.   In fact, arguably, the movie doing well and Amy being well received in the role (as she most likely will be due to her incredible talent) is one of the only saving graces that many Superman fans have right now.   In fact, a movie that has Lois Lane as the lead female and “lynchpin” of the film tanking actually validates Dan Didio and the entire new 52 mindset that has attempted to marginalize Lois in the narrative.  So be aware that if you are hoping Man of Steel tanks you aren’t actually fighting back against the new 52 agenda….you are helping to make excuses for it and supporting it.  I understand that many of you aren’t Superfans but if you are truly advocating for the best interest of women in comics, telling people to boycott a film in which Lois Lane has a starring role right now is not hurting the right people.  If that movie tanks?  It’s not a good thing for Lois Lane going forward.   Because you know how this goes guys….they always blame the woman.

Encouraging people not to buy toys that have a DC logo on them—-even if they are FEMALE MARKETED TOYS—-doesn’t hurt Dan Didio.  But it does send a message to the people marketing and making these toys that “girls toys” are a waste of money.   Wonder Woman’s invisible jet toy sitting on the toy shelf doesn’t actually send the message you think it sends.

If the CW is successful with getting an Amazon TV show pilot up and running in the next year —-not watching it (and railing against it) doesn’t actually hurt Dan Didio or the new 52.  But it might hurt Wonder Woman because it again sends the message that Diana isn’t worthy of her own media property nor as being treated as a powerful player in her own right worthy of her own narrative.   It also basically kills the idea that Wonder Woman will ever get her own film franchise.   You aren’t helping make Wonder Woman better by doing that——you are hurting her fans.   So by all means, drop the new 52 Wonder Woman book that insists on removing the “woman” from Wonder Woman and turning the Amazons into baby killers.  But if a project comes along that finally treats Diana as she deserves….and people don’t support it?  The alternative is telling the CW that a female driven hero series isn’t worth their time.

Believe me…I agree 100% that the goal here has to be swift action and a firm message about the kinds of horrific discrimination taking place right now within this company.  I am devastated by what has happened to Gail.  I agree 100% that it’s time to be swift and severe when it comes to the new 52.  As I said above, I refuse to purchase anything in the new 52 and I’ve kept to that for months now.

But some of the things being advocated here don’t actually hurt the people you think they are hurting.  They hurt other women who have a favorite character that maybe you personally aren’t thinking of….but who still needs some of these things in order to survive the long haul after the new 52 bullshit is over.  Just think about this before you advocate a few of these things.   We have a tendancy to view fandom through our own lens.  Many times, that lens is through that Batman lens because Batman is so incredibly popular across the board.  But a few of these things?  They actually would be detrimental to other female fans across the board…particularly to the fans who are desperately hoping that Lois Lane and Wonder Woman come out the other side of this bullshit intact.  So just keep it in mind.

I’m treading very carefully with this because I truly do support the absolutely rage and heartbreak over what has happened to Gail.  I fully support doing everything possible to make it known to DC that we find Didio’s behavior across the board unacceptable and doing everything we can to support Gail.  I fully support dropping every single DC book in the new 52.  Just be aware of some of the other impacts to other female fans if some of this stuff is followed through on.

These are also very, very good points.

We say: boycott the New 52, but don’t hurt the stuff Didio has no say in. And it’s not a bad idea to keep picking up Li’l Gotham and other preboot online comics like Cass’s Batgirl run, Steph’s Batgirl run, Birds of Prey, et. cetera, among other things.

ealperin asked: No trans character in Batgirl, either? Or is that still in the books, before you leave? :3

Gail Simone answered: I think it’s very unlikely that thread will be followed up on in Batgirl, sadly. The worst thing about this is all the beautiful things we had set up will likely…
